You wouldn’t want your lookout watching the back of the ship!
Give your business the best chance of success and start looking out of the pointy end.
Management accounts to help you manage:
Management accounting is as simple as that.
Accounts to help you manage.
You see producing the annual statutory accounts is important, after all, you can be fined for not doing so but they aren’t a huge amount of help in running your company.
Statutory accounts are backwards-looking. They tell you where you have been and not where you are going.
In essence, they are like looking out of the back of the ship and hoping you don’t hit anything!
Management accounts are different because they are forward-looking.
They tell you what’s working well and what’s working not so well.
They give you ideas for opportunities that you can exploit.
Dedicated two person eTeam
They tell you if your ship is going to hit an iceberg.
Management accounts to help you manage:
Management accounts don’t have any set format.
As the name implies, they are for the use of management so whatever is helpful is included and if it’s not helpful it gets binned.
Typically, a set of management accounts might include:
KPIs - Key Performance Indicators for your business that give you a snapshot of how things are going.
P&L - up to date profit and loss showing you exactly where you are on a monthly basis
Cash flow forecast - where you are with cash and if there are any rocky waters ahead
Budget and variances - The budget you’ve set, a forecast of how you are doing and any variances together with the reasons.
Debtors listing - who owes you money and needs chasing up
Sales reports - who are your most profitable customers? Who are the worst payers? Who might present a good opportunity to sell more to?

If you Google “what’s in a set of management accounts” you won’t get a definitive answer.

What Are Management Accounts?
Management accounts are financial reports prepared by a business for its internal use. They provide detailed financial information and analysis to help management make informed decisions.
Why Do We Need Management Accounts?
The primary purpose of management accounts is to assist decision-making within a company. They provide insights into the company's financial performance, helping management monitor progress, identify trends, and make strategic decisions.
Difference between management accounts and statutory accounts
Management accounts are tailored for internal management and focus on day-to-day operational decisions, while statutory accounts are prepared for external stakeholders, follow legal and regulatory standards, and provide an annual snapshot of a company's financial position and performance.
